TITLE : USING PARADOX ON A TOPS NETWORK
Paradox 3.0 can be run on the TOPS network. It is important to
understand the following information about Paradox 3 and TOPS
before attempting the installation.
o TOPS is not an officially supported network. The software
has not undergone the full scope of rigorous testing
before product release. Additionally, Technical Support
does not have information regarding TOPS beyond the scope
of this Tech Info sheet, and would be unable to assist you
concerning information specific to TOPS.
o Paradox is a disk intensive program, which will effect its
performance on a TOPS network. The Paradox Network
Administrator's Guide has a section on network
performance, and will give you specific ideas for
improving network performance.
The following information is designed to supplement the standard
software installation procedure:
1. There is a patch to TOPS to allow it to increase the
number of files in the CONFIG.SYS file. This must be
done, as the default number is too low for Paradox.
2. Set the timeout to at least 2000. Check your TOPS network
guide on how to do this.
3. Do NOT run Paradox from the server. The configuration
files setting needs to be outrageously high and it needs a
lot of RAM over 640.
4. TOPS is a memory intensive network, so if you want to run
applications, as opposed to just interactive work, you
will need to obtain EEMS RAM memory expansion boards.
5. We recommend any expanded memory board that supports the
LIM 3.2 Expanded Memory Specification. Paradox will also
work with the LIM 4.0 specification, but the LIM 3.2
memory cards will actually provide more memory to Paradox.
6. When starting Paradox 3, you will have to include the
command line switch "-share" (without the quotes). This
will allow Paradox to perform the proper network

housekeeping functions necessary for the TOPS network.
You may find it convenient to use a batch file to start
Paradox, so that the users will not have to remember to
use the -share option every time.
